Fourways to Deneysville Route

This past weekend we decided to do a trip down to the Vaal dam. Now we bring you this weeks motorcycle route review!

fouways to deneysvill route

Leaving Fourways we took the N1 towards the Bucclue interchange, then the N3 all the way to Alberton’s side in the South of Johannesburg, where we eventually took the off ramp to the left onto the R59. The road all the way to Sasolburg is fairly boring, with a bend here and there. This is a good time to think of all the things you still need to do later on…

Once you have hit Sasolburg, you take a left onto the R57, taking you past the Sasol plant. You then carry on with the road a bit further until you get to the second four way stop where the road to the left is the R549. This was the first road where the quality of the tar seems to have taken a turn for the worse, with some very bumpy areas. On this road you carry on for about 25km until you will see the entrance to the town on the right.

In Deneysville there are a few places you can stop to have a bite to eat. We decided to go the the Village Inn Pub and Entertainment restaurant, close to the dam. Although the place doesn’t look that great, the food was quite impressive, with a massive breakfast serving for R55. Not too shabby.

After your meal, you can also go the the docks and have a drink there while taking in the views overlooking the dam.

While you are in the town, be sure to check out the Motorcycle Museum. Unfortunately I have not been there yet myself but will definitely check it out the next time I am there.

Coming back

When we left, we were almost empty so we filled up at the Engen garage as you exist Deneysville.

From there we turned right onto the R549 again and headed to Heidelberg. The road up to the R54 is pretty good, but as soon as you cross it you go back to a pretty shit road surface. At least many of the potholes have been patched but overall it was not the most pleasant ride.

Once you hit Heidelburg, you simply follow the signs to the N3 and then head back to Joburg.

Overall it is a nice route to take for a pretty relaxed ride and a day out at the dam, but its probably not one we will do very often. The roads there and back are pretty uninspiring and some of is just not that much fun to ride.

We therefore give this route only 3 stars. Let us know in the comment section or on our Facebook page what you think of this route.
